The P-51 Mustang is very popular, but was it the best?

The P-51 Mustang was and is a very popular airplane among pilots and warbird fans alike. It made a lot of very important contributions to the victories in World War II and later conflicts.

But was it really the best fighter airplane of its era? Did another airplane just not get its chance?
